The Brief Story

The Movement is a 45 minute composition written by Bob van Luijt for the group Square Orange.

The Why

To me playing music is like telling a story. Most of the times storys are told through an lyrics, composition or improvisation. I was wondering what would happen if the improvisations were carried by the composition.
You could compare it with a motion picture, there are a lot of beautiful film scores that serve the story that is being told in the movie. I wanted to have the same power film scores have, but instead of a motion picture I have the improvisations. The improvisations are telling the story and the form of the composition is guiding the music.
The 3 Movements is a piece that takes you on a journey just like a movie does in the movietheater.

The Idea

In July 2007 I had the idea to write a composition based on influences out of european jazz, minimalistic, modern classical and electric music. With this set of musical colors and tools in mind, the search and studies started.
After some time I had the idea to create a composition in the form of a movement. A movement with no title and no lyrics. There is no message, just a musical journey.

The Preparation

Because I was still a student (ArtEZ Master) I had the opportunity to prepare myself by asking tons of questions to composers, musicians, producers, etcetera. With all this information the idea took form. One of the results was that the the composition now lasts approximatly 45 minutes. And because of that it was starting to get more difficult to keep the composition into one musical statement.

The Writing

On January the 5th 2009 I traveled to Boston and studied at Berklee College of Music. During my stay in Boston I had the opportunity to dig deeper in to the material. After a few weeks it was time to put the gathered information into order and start the writing process.
I decided that the composition should contain three parts and I came up with a leitmotif containing three notes that appear in all three parts.

The Challenges

As with any other big project you encounter some challenges.
When we, as a group, perform the 3 Movements we are combining acoustic instruments with electric instruments, sequencers and computers. We had to find a way to deal with the practical problems that come along during performances. The group uses sequenced parts throughout the whole piece.
Another challenge is the size of the composition. Because I wanted to have a big pallet of sound, the musicians had to play more instruments than just their main instrument. I decided NOT to arrange the piece. The musicians where presented with a musical score with no predetermined .....

About The Tree and The Number 3

As stated earlier the composition consists of 3 movements with a 3 note leitmotif whitch acts as the main theme. I wanted to have a tree as a logo for the project because the tree resembles all the different ideas and musical styles coming together into one composition.

In the end the most important thing is that you, as a listener, enjoy the music and have you're own thoughts about it.
